College Sports Roundup: Terry nets success for St. Lawrence lacrosse

by | May 1, 2019 | Sports

Hopkinton’s Alex Terry, a junior goalie on the lacrosse team at St. Lawrence University, recently was named to the Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-America first team. Earlier this season Terry was named Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week after helping his team to consecutive wins.

A Tri-Valley League All-Star at Hopkinton High School who then prepped at New Hampton School before heading to St. Lawrence, Terry appeared in a total of 33 games over his first two seasons with the Saints. This year, through April 23, he had started all 14 games, going 11-3 with a goals-against average of 6.74 and a save percentage of .571. …

UConn senior Jimmy Hervol ended his college golf career by shooting a 2-under-par 69 and finishing eighth at the American Athletic Conference Championship in Innisbrook, Florida, on April 21-23. Hervol became the first UConn player to shoot a sub-70 round in the six-year history over the AAC Championship, and he had the best-ever finish by a UConn golfer at the event, tying his own record set the past two seasons.

Hervol, who served as Huskies captain for the second straight season, set the school record for the best per-round average in a season, posting a 71.06 in 32 rounds — one of many school records he owns. …

Will Abbott has his college lacrosse career off to a strong start. The Quinnipiac freshman midfielder was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week twice in the season’s first two months. Through April 23 he had started all 13 of the Bobcats’ games and recorded 15 goals and 12 assists, helping his team to a record of 7-6 (4-2 MAAC). Classmate DJ Sloan, who starred with Abbott last year for the Hillers, has seen limited action. …

Tim Simoes, a sophomore second baseman on the baseball team at Army, played in 18 games through April 23, starting 13 of them and batting .304 with a home run, 12 RBIs and seven walks. The Cadets were 24-16 overall and 11-6 in Patriot League play heading into the last two weeks of the regular season, and coming off a season series victory over Navy for the first time since 2014. …

Elise Chandler, a senior defender on the lacrosse team at the University of New Hampshire, started all 15 of her team’s games through April 23 and was second on the Wildcats in ground balls, averaging 1.8 per game. UNH headed into the final week of the regular season with a record of 10-5 overall and 5-1 in league play, good for second place. …

Josh Sokol was named captain of the football team at Sacred Heart University. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Sokol has been a three-year starter at center for the Pioneers, who went 7-4 last fall and won the Northeast Conference with a 5-1 league mark.
