Edwina Kirby

Edwina M. Kirby, 93, of Bellingham passed away at her home on Aug. 31 after a short illness. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Edmund L and Dorothy (Schmutz) Mullin of Hopkinton.

Edwina worked at Fenwal, in the Framingham Union Hospital maternity ward, and many years at the Natick Police Department until her retirement. After retirement she continued to be active volunteering at St. Brendan’s Church, working at the Bellingham Department of Public Works, and for many years, until recently, working at the Holliston Senior Center as a receptionist and acting as the head of her cherished Senior Center Bookstore.

She was a cat lover, an avid book reader, and a huge fan of science fiction, especially “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.” She loved sitting on the deck down the Cape reading a book and chatting with family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Steven Kirby of Uxbridge, sisters, Patricia Carmichael and husband Rick of Franklin, and Maureen Zachary and husband Mark of Concord, California, and brother, Edmund “Skip” Mullin Jr. of Wenham. She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Kanze. She also has numerous nieces/nephews, grandnieces/nephews, and great-grandnieces/nephews, all of whom she loved very much.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Sept. 7, from 4-8 p.m. at the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home, 34 Church Street, Hopkinton. The funeral will be held Wednesday, Sept. 8, from the funeral home at 8:45 a.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated  at 10 a.m. in Saint Brendan’s Church, 384 Hartford Ave., Bellingham.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Edwina’s memory can be made to the Holliston Senior Center, 150 Goulding Street, Holliston, MA 01746.
