HHS student magazine, artist recognized in national competition

by | Jan 24, 2023 | Education

Marginal, the student magazine at Hopkinton High School, received highest honors in a national competition, while junior Emily Jiang won an art honor.

The organization REALM (Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines) recognized Marginal as First Class, a designation assigned to only 38 magazines. Schools in 42 states and five countries nominated 262 student magazines — middle school, high school and higher education — for the competition.

Marginal also was awarded first place with special merit designation in the 2022 ASPA (American Scholastic Press Association) literary magazine contest. It was one of only four magazines so recognized among schools with 1,000-1,700 students.

Jiang was presented an Outstanding Art designation for her oil painting titled “Free Sailing.” She was one of seven artists to be so honored, and the first ever from Marginal.

Copies of Marginal are available for $10 at Hopkinton High School through magazine adviser Benjamin Lally or at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts.
