The Hopkinton Fire Department’s annual open house is set for Oct. 19 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the headquarters on Main Street. Residents old and young will have the opportunity to learn more about fire safety, view demonstrations and hang out with Sparky the Fire Dog. Refreshments will be provided.

Attendees of last year’s open house had opportunities to look at some firefighting and emergency equipment, sit in a fire truck, try out a fire hose and more.

According to a press release from the HFD, the open house is a chance for Hopkinton firefighters to focus on the educational theme for Fire Prevention week.

This year’s theme centers on safety around lithium-ion batteries in the home. Key safety areas around these batteries include buying only listed products, safely charging devices and proper disposal.

Lithium-ion batteries are an increasingly popular power source for electronics but pose increased risks of fire and explosions. HFD Chief Gary Daugherty commented regarding a minor fire at the E.L. Harvey recycling center last year caused by these batteries that their proliferation has led to a “rash of fires” throughout the country. The batteries may have been a factor in a two-alarm fire in a commercial building on Avenue E last month.
