Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.
Hoopla helps HPL eliminate wait times for digital media
The Hopkinton Public Library has a brand new way for patrons to check out digital media — the Hoopla platform.
Hoopla is a digital lending platform that anyone with a library card can use. It provides access to hundreds of audiobooks, e-books, movies, television shows, magazines and more.
The library officially added Hoopla to its digital offerings in October. HPL director Nanci Hill said that adding Hoopla as another service for patrons is part of an effort to reduce wait times for digital media.
“We already were offering downloadable audiobooks and e-books through OverDrive’s Libby platform,” Hill explained. “But we’re restricted by publisher rulings on how often [an item] can be checked out before we have to purchase another lease.”
She added that “it could could be a really long time” before a patron gets access to a title on Libby due to those restrictions.
Hoopla, in contrast, has no wait times. Instead, multiple users can check out the same item at once. Every Hopkinton library card holder gets six downloads per month to check out shows, movies, books and so on.
Hill noted that Hoopla also has a program called BingePass, which allows patrons access to collections of content for a single download.
By spreading the word about Hoopla, Hill hopes that “folks know there’s an option rather than having to purchase a title on your own or wait forever on a waitlist.”
