The Hopkinton Historical Society and the Hopkinton Historical Commission are teaming up to co-host a historical walk down Hayden Rowe Street next month.

The walk is planned or Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. with a rain date of Oct. 19. Starting at the Historical Society building, attendees will spend about 45 minutes walking and learning about houses and sites around the intersection of Chestnut Street and Hayden Rowe Street.

“It’s not going to be too much of a strain of a walk,” said Anne Mattina, president of the Historical Society. She, along with Joe Colella and Mike Roughan of the Historical Commission, will lead the walk.

“We’re not going in any place — [we’re] just going to walk around and talk about who lived in those houses and the architecture,” Mattina added.

The walk will include a trip over to Hughes Farm Trail, where a newly installed sign discusses some of the nearby historic locations. Those locations include several farms that once existed on Hayden Rowe street and the former Hayden Rowe Hall.

The hall formerly was a church, a firehouse and a meetinghouse where local antislavery and temperance movements grew. Mattina said that famous abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass once spoke there.

Following the conclusion of the walk on Oct. 5, attendees are invited back to the Historical Society building for refreshments. The walk is free and open to people of all ages.
