Hopkinton Today for Friday, Sept. 5: HPL to host puzzle race this weekend

Library brings back popular puzzle race event

Bragging rights are on the line once again as teams prepare for the Hopkinton Public Library’s puzzle race this weekend.

This Sunday at 1 p.m., nine teams will compete to see who can complete their puzzle the fastest. According to adult services librarian Dan Boudreau, this event’s puzzle will be a challenge.

“This race, we’re using a 500-piece puzzle,” Boudreau stated. He went on to note the library sources the puzzles for the challenge from other libraries.

“There’s a puzzle race exchange among libraries where we each buy 5-10 copies of a particular puzzle and lend them to each other so that we can have these races without having to buy new puzzles each time,” he explained.

This weekend’s race is the third the HPL has hosted. According to Boudreau, it also held puzzle races in February and June of this year. He said that given the popularity of these races at other libraries, the HPL wanted to offer the program as well.

Registration is full for Sunday’s event, which is for anyone ages 9 and up.

“At the last puzzle race, we had participants of all ages, including some grandparent and grandkid teams, which was great to see,” stated Boudreau.

“This is actually one of the really great things about holding these on the weekends, since kids are out of school and many adults are not at work,” he added.
