Fair aims to connect seniors with community resources

The Hopkinton Senior Center is trying something new later this month: a resource fair for older residents.

According to outreach coordinator Kim Carson, the idea for the fair was borrowed from other communities. She recalled that she and fellow Senior Center outreach coordinator Julia Schneiderman heard about Natick running a similar event during a regional outreach meeting earlier this year.

“We thought it would be a nice addition to try out here,” said Carson.

The fair will be held Sept. 17 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The goal, according to Carson, is to bring community resources to seniors that they may find beneficial. “We’re looking just to get the most important resources here, mostly to help our seniors live independently at home,” she said.

No registration is required for the fair, and it is not exclusive to Hopkinton residents. Representatives from a number of town departments and groups will be in attendance, including the Hopkinton Fire Department, the Health Department and the Friends of Hopkinton Seniors. Carson highlighted areas of interest to seniors that will be represented at the event such as home modification, tax exemptions, financial assistance and transportation.

Hopkinton Police will be in attendance to offer drug take-back services. State Rep. James Arena-DeRosa also is expected to attend.

A unique feature of the day will be a speaker series. It will kick off at around 10:30 a.m. and go through the remainder of the event.

“It’s not normally something that’s done at a resource fair,” said Carson. Speakers will discuss topics such as pelvic floor health, rental assistance, improving sleep, Medicare and saving money on medications.

The resource fair has 31 organizations, vendors and town departments signed up to participate. The event will be spread out throughout the Senior Center, with the majority of tables set up in its great room.
