Today’s Memorial Day ceremonies begin bright and early at Evergreen Cemetery on Wood Street in Woodville.

The 9:45 a.m. gathering is the first of three stops during the day. From Evergreen Cemetery, the ceremony will move into St. John’s Cemetery and the Soldiers Mound in Mt. Auburn Cemetery on Mayhew Street. Those events will take place from 10:15-10:45 a.m.

Today’s main event will take place at the gazebo on the Town Common. Starting at 11:15 a.m., the ceremony will feature music from the Hopkinton High School band, prayers from local faith leaders, the placing of wreaths and remarks from a handful of speakers.

“[We have] several people who are speaking who really contribute every year,” said resident Mike Whalen, an American Legion member and United States Marine Corps veteran. Whalen is involved in organizing this year’s ceremonies.

According to Whalen, speakers will include Select Board member Amy Ritterbusch and Mike Arakelian from Old Guard New England — the group that organizes the gun salutes for Hopkinton’s Memorial Day ceremonies. Second Lt. Brandon Sarrasin, an Air Force junior officer stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base, will give the keynote speech.

Whalen also noted that he and Richard Cannon of St. John Evangelist Parish will speak at events earlier in the day.

Hopkinton High School student Sarah Brennan will return for her third year as master of ceremonies.

Following the conclusion of events at the Town Common, Whalen said residents are welcome to gather at St. John’s.

“There will be some snacks and sandwiches and stuff for people to sit down and have a conversation, and just have a good time,” Whalen said.

Whalen stressed the importance of having residents show up to remember fallen military members.

“Veterans in town really appreciate it when there’s a show of support,” he said.
