Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Diversion is the name of the game for the Sustainable Green Committee’s annual Recycling & Reuse Day.
“The goal is to provide residents a way to dispose of unwanted items that either still have life in them or can be reasonably recycled,” said SGC member Christine Coffman.
Now in its fifth year, the recycling day — which runs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. this Saturday at the Marathon School — aims to keep things out of the waste stream that can be reused. The event also has broad goals for educating residents about sustainability.
Organizing the one-day event requires coordination with multiple organizations and town partners. Coffman noted that Eversource will be on-site to take inefficient dehumidifiers, and Holliston-based Green Team Junk Removal will collect things like furniture and appliances for a fee. The Department of Public Works will provide support for document shredding.
The day also is organized to collect goods that can benefit local nonprofits. Coffman explained that things like textiles, plastic film and gently used books will go to organizations like Project Just Because and Baypath.
The time and effort spent on organizing the recycling event has yielded results. Opening up the day to Ashland residents as well as Hopkinton led to 600 cars going through the line last year.
“We did almost 1 ton of shredding,” Coffman remarked. Volunteers also collected over 140 dehumidifiers, four truckloads of goods for Green Team and 1.5 tons of textiles. Coffman praised the amount of textiles saved in particular. “It’s great that’s not going to a landfill or being shipped directly overseas,” she said. “There’s a lot of life left in the clothing.”
This year’s reuse day remains mostly the same as last year. Coffman noted that organizers have added a police detail to better control traffic flow, and volunteers will be able to take rigid plastic.
