A local darts team raised $1,500 for the veterans nonprofit Project New Hope on Veterans Day this past November.

“It was pretty impressive,” said team captain Paul Watkeys. “It’s a nice reflection of the community spirit that exists in Hopkinton.” He added that the event was supported by BoMain Pizza Bar & Grill and the captain of another darts team called FItzy’s Misfits. Both teams play out of BoMain as part of the Minute Man Dart League.

According to Watkeys, the event was set up as a darts marathon. The team offered anybody any sum of money to play against its members. Depending on the score and the outcome of the match, the team would donate money.

“We basically donated $10 per win on their side,” said Watkeys. BoMain also contributed $250 to the fundraising effort.

The money was handed off to Project New Hope, a Worcester-based veterans nonprofit. The organization provides help to veterans with things like financial and food assistance, wellness retreats and peer support. Watkeys said the donation was made in part to recognize a fellow teammate who is supported by the organization.

Watkeys noted the event also was about connecting with the community. “We really engaged people who ordinarily hadn’t played darts before,” he said.

A Southborough resident, Watkeys said he started the team after he and his son moved to the United States from the United Kingdom 18 months ago. He added that the majority of the players on the team are Hopkinton residents. Given the success of the fundraiser, he anticipates the team will hold another one next Veterans Day.

“We’ve decided to do it annually,” said Watkeys. “It will come together nicely.”
