Although elections for town offices are over, there still are ways for Hopkinton residents to get involved in local government.

In a recent email to residents, the town publicized that a number of town boards and committees have current or upcoming vacancies. According to the email, 23 committees have some sort of opening they are looking to fill. These include the Appropriation Committee, the Board of Appeals, the Hopkinton Cultural Council, the Marathon Fund Committee and many more.

The list also includes a few new committees. The newly re-formed Trails Committee is seeking members, along with the Water & Sewer Advisory Board (WSAB).

The town has opened up applications for the new Economic Development Advisory Board as well. The board needs seven members, and it’s intended to advise the Select Board on economic matters that would support sustainable development and help expand the commercial and industrial tax base.

Serving on these committees offers residents an opportunity to help guide the town in certain matters. For example, the WSAB is working on developing recommendation’s for the next fiscal year’s water and sewer rates. The Community Preservation Committee — which also is on the list of committees with vacancies — is spearheading a major reuse plan for Center School.

Residents interested in serving on a board or committee first must apply online. From there, most applicants will need to go before the Select Board to be appointed to a position. Those with questions can contact Vasudha Dutta at the Town Manager’s Office at 508-497-9701.
