Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Sisters collect over 500 pounds of candy for National Guard

A pair of Hopkinton sisters recently collected sweet treats to donate to members of the military.

Aadya and Rishvi Nagamalla gathered 551 pounds of candy last month in partnership with Ekam USA for the Treats for Troops initiative. The candy was donated to the New Hampshire National Guard.

“It was a fun activity for the kids,” said Radhika Nagamalla, the girls’ mother. “They learned about community spirit and how they can give back to the community.”

Nagamalla explained that the quarter-ton of candy collected was solicited from both community members and local organizations such as the Hopkinton Center for the Arts, Hopkinton Public Library, Fay School in Southborough and the Hopkinton Public Schools.

“All of them came forward when we reached out and helped us collect so much candy,” said Nagamalla.

This annual program is a regular undertaking for the Nagamalla family as part of their involvement with Ekam USA. The nonprofit, which offers medical support to communities in the U.S. and India, runs fundraising programs throughout the year. However, Nagamalla said, “This is the one thing that brings the passion out in us.”

Aadya and Rishvi have participated in the Treats for Troops program for about four years, Nagamalla explained. The girls collected 487 pounds of candy in 2023.

“The girls love it, and we love being a part of this initiative,” said Nagamalla.
