Hopkinton Today for Tuesday, Feb. 18: Select Board to discuss DEI commitment

by | Feb 18, 2025 | Featured: Features,

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

The Select Board will take up a discussion about the town’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging at its meeting tonight.

The agenda item follows from a public comment made during the Feb. 4 meeting of the Select Board. At that meeting, Jak Miller, assistant director of the Hopkinton Library, spoke to the board as a resident regarding the town’s DEI policies.

“As we’ve seen on a national scale, so much and so many leaders have been recently seeking to sow division,” said Miller.

“In Hopkinton, I hope that we’re all uniting together to seek to unite and be an example for others in a path of unity,” she added.

At the meeting, Miller attempted to ask each Select Board member to go on record and reaffirm their commitment to the town’s DEI policies. Due to the fact the issue was not on the meeting agenda, the board could not engage in a dialogue at that point.

The matter will get a formalized discussion during the town manager’s report at tonight’s Select Board meeting.

Hopkinton’s commitment to equity and inclusion is enshrined in the Preamble and Article 1 of the Town Charter. The Select Board unanimously voted to adopt a pledge in December 2020 “to address systemic racism, social injustice and inequity in the way we govern and provide services to our residents and businesses.”
