High school hockey teams to meet rivals in cancer fundraising matches

The Hopkinton High School girls and boys hockey teams will face off against their Tri-Valley League rivals this weekend while raising money for cancer research.
The girls and boys teams will meet at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough on Saturday to face off against Medfield and Westwood, respectively. The event will raise money for cancer research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
According to Brian Jean, one of the event organizers and father of one of the girls’ team captains, funds raised will be split between the girlygirl P.A.R.T.S. Foundation, which focuses on ovarian cancer, and Dana Farber’s young onset colon cancer center.
In prior years, the cancer fundraiser was run solely by the girls hockey program. “We’re broadening it a bit this year,” said Jean.
“We wanted to do a joint event this year,” he added. “When we get the teams together, we get more attendees.”
The day will include fundraising activities such as a bake sale and a 50/50 raffle. Players and their parents are involved in putting together the raffle goods, according to Jean. “It’s a team effort,” he said.
In a follow-up email, Jean noted that the event raised $3,000 last year. “Our goal [this year] is to beat that,” he stated.
The fundraiser also will feature an appearance by girls hockey alum Keelan Boyle. She helped start the fundraiser about a decade ago after her mother, Marie, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Jean said both hockey teams are looking forward to playing on Saturday. “They’re excited,” he noted.
