Hopkinton Today: Thursday, May 2

by | May 2, 2024 | Featured: Features, Hopkinton Today

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

The topic of racism emerged during the public comment period of Tuesday night’s Select Board meeting, as several residents spoke out in support of vice chair Shahidul Mannan and outgoing member Irfan Nasrullah. The two men of color on the board said they have experienced racist and culturally offensive comments as well as being accused of misogynistic behavior in a local blog.

The Select Board bid farewell to two of its leaders at Tuesday’s meeting, as chair Muriel Kramer and veteran member Irfan Nasrullah appeared at their final meeting as members.

A fight broke out in a hallway in Framingham District Court Tuesday after a Milford man was arraigned on a murder charge in the death of a Milford woman in what authorities have called an apparent road rage incident that took place in Hopkinton last month.

Only a few questions were raised following an hour-long presentation regarding the proposed Hopkins School addition/renovation project at Tuesday’s public forum. Residents will vote on the plan at Town Meeting, which starts May 6, and again on the May 20 ballot — with it needing approval both times in order to move forward.

This week’s Police Log includes two arrests along with reports of a woman being held for ransom, a man yelling at vehicles on Main Street and multiple cases of road rage.

Xiuhan Zhu, a fifth grader at Hopkins Elementary School, was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall as the result of a near perfect score and first-place finish in the junior division of the Crescendo International Music Competition.

The Hopkinton Lions Club Meat Raffle is set for this Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at Cornell’s Irish Pub in Hopkinton. Prizes include beef, pork, chicken and more.

Town meetings tonight include the Cemetery Commission (6), School Committee (7) and Open Space Preservation Commission (7).
