The Hopkinton Police Department arrested a 19-year-old Hopkinton resident involved in a rollover crash on Pond Street late Saturday night, according to the interim police chief.

This was the first of two weekend incidents where the vehicle operator was determined by officers to have been driving with blood alcohol content levels of at least twice the legal limit, noted Interim Police Chief Scott van Raalten in an email to the Independent Monday.

On Saturday night, police received a call at 11:41 p.m. regarding a vehicle rollover in the area of 4 Pond Street, van Raalten shared. According to the caller, the driver appeared to be trapped in the vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers noted that the male driver had extricated himself from the vehicle, which was on its roof.

“He was treated for minor injuries by Hopkinton Fire personnel and refused transport to the hospital,” van Raalten stated.

After he failed field sobriety tests, the driver “was taken into custody and transported to the station for booking,” the interim police chief added.

The driver, who lives in that neighborhood, was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lane violation.

“The operator of the rollover aged 19 had a BAC of .270, which is more than triple the legal limit,” according to an HPD Facebook post.

The legal blood alcohol limit in Massachusetts is .08%, according to mass.gov.

An officer also noted property damage, according to the police log.

Another driver arrested

Police made a second OUI arrest early Sunday morning.

At approximately 4:02 a.m., officers responded to a report of a person driving erratically at the Upton town line and “a possible road rage incident at West Main Street,” according to van Raalten.

“While en route, officers located a vehicle matching the description on the side of the roadway,” he stated. “ While speaking with the operator, officers observed signs of intoxication.”

After failing field sobriety tests, a 30-year-old Hudson man was taken into police custody on Downey Street. He was charged with operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

According to the HPD Facebook post, this driver’s blood alcohol level was “double the legal limit.”

An officer checked for property damage up to the Upton town line, according to the police log. A  tire was found in the front yard of 187 West Main Street.

“This is a serious reminder to never take the risk and always get a sober ride,” the Facebook post stressed.

It also stated that officers are involved in a “summer OUI enforcement campaign funded by a traffic grant” through Sept. 15.
