The Hopkinton Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying one or more individuals involved in a suspected door knocking prank around the Legacy Farms South area over the past several months.
A post shared on Facebook by the HPD on Saturday shows images of at least one individual captured on security camera interacting with a resident’s door. The post states that the incidents have spanned from April to this month.
In an email, interim Hopkinton Police Chief Scott van Raalten stated that the department was chasing several leads in the case and was deferring on making a public comment until it had “more definitive information.” He noted, however, that the incidents may be related to a viral “door kick challenge” made popular on TikTok.
According to reporting from WCVB, the challenge is an “advanced” form of ding dong ditch where participants approach homes and kick at doors, almost to the point of breaking them. The Westborough Police Department issued a warning to its residents about the issue last month, calling the trend “extremely dangerous to everyone involved, including the victim homeowners.”
When asked to confirm the incidents were related to the challenge, van Raalten replied it was possible, but “they are knocking, not trying to kick the door down.”
An entry in the police log from Oct. 16 lists a complaint from a Frostpane Lane caller who reported a male party banged on her door, noting the issue was ongoing. Police chased a subject in that incident but were unable to locate the individual after they entered the woods.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the HPD at 508-497-3401.
