Update: Main Street paving work for Boston Marathon to start Tuesday

by | Sep 27, 2021 | News

Editor’s note: The town announced Tuesday that it updated its plans for paving work. The updates have been included here.

The town announced Monday that in preparation for the Oct. 11 Boston Marathon, the Main Street Corridor Project will focus on cleanup, roadway/sidewalk repairs and paving Main Street from Pleasant Street to Ash Street, starting Tuesday.

The work will require one lane of alternating traffic through the work areas as well as a detour being set up this Wednesday, closing the eastbound lane of Main Street just east of the 85/135 intersection to Hayden Rowe Street. Update: An additional detour has been added for Thursday, and the detour route has been modified.

During this work, on-street parking will not be accessible where milling or paving operations are occurring, the town announced. Driveways and vehicular access to businesses will be temporarily blocked while these operations pass by these locations.

Following is a schedule of the work to be performed:

Tuesday, Sept. 28 (Milling of Main Street — Ash to Pleasant)
Milling of Main Street will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Main Street/Ash Street intersection and continue westbound to Pleasant Street. The operations will then turn around and continue milling operations eastbound back to Ash Street.

Wednesday, Sept. 29 (Paving of Main Street — Ash to 85/135 Intersection)
Paving operations of both eastbound and westbound lanes on Main Street will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 29, starting at the 135/Ash Street intersection, including Marathon Way, and working toward the 135/85 intersection. An eastbound detour will be utilized with one lane of traffic being maintained throughout the work zone.

Thursday, Sept. 30 (Paving of Main Street — 85/135 Intersection to Pleasant Street)
On Thursday, paving operations will continue starting at Pleasant Street to the 135/85 intersection. Update: An eastbound detour will be utilized with one lane of traffic being maintained throughout the work zone. The contractor may need to work extended hours on Thursday to complete all paving. If unable to be completed in one day, the paving will be completed on Friday.

Friday, Oct. 1 (Paving of Main Street — Complete paving work scheduled the 29th or 30th but not completed)
Paving operations will include any paving work that was not able to be completed on the 29th and 30th. Line striping will begin along the corridor from Pleasant Street to Ash Street.

Monday, Oct. 4, and Tuesday, Oct. 5
Line striping and construction debris cleanup will continue until completed.

Wednesday, Oct. 6, Thursday Oct. 7, and Friday Oct. 8
No work — contractor not on-site.
