Michael Umina Sr.

Michael P. Umina Sr., 72, a former longtime resident of Hopkinton, passed away suddenly on July 2, 2026, while visiting with family.

Born on Sept. 10, 1953, Michael was the son of Anthony and Julie Umina (both deceased). They moved to Hopkinton in 1964. He graduated Hopkinton High school in 1971 and completed his education at UMass Amherst and Brigham Young University in Utah, where he met and married Diana.

Michael shared 49 wonderful yet at times challenging years of marriage with his beloved wife, Diana Umina. After graduating college, they returned to Hopkinton to start and raise their family. All six children graduated from Hopkinton High School.

Michael was a mechanical engineer by profession, but his love of all things mechanical went far beyond his career. He often could be found fixing cars, trucks, tractors and just about anything else that had a motor or moving parts. He had a natural curiosity and a talent for understanding how things worked and making them work again.

He loved traveling by car with his family whenever they had the opportunity, and later, after both retired, enjoyed traveling with Diana to visit family and create new memories together. Recently they downsized and settled in North Carolina.

An avid gardener, Michael took great pride in growing food with and for his family — and usually had plenty to share with others. His garden was another reflection of the way he lived: with patience, generosity and a desire to provide for those around him.

Michael was a longtime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His faith was an important part of his life, and he truly believed in treating others as family and helping anyone who needed it. He will be remembered for his generous heart, willingness to help, practical wisdom and the many ways he quietly made a difference in the lives of others.

Michael is survived by his wife, Diana Umina; his children, Dan Umina with Jenny Morris and family (Washington), Eric Umina with Tiffany Umina and family (Idaho), Patience Umina Aylstock with Jason Aylstock and family (Texas), Jon Umina with Amy Umina and family (Utah) Joe Umina with Jessica Umina and family (Utah), and Mike Umina Jr. with Iva Gishin (Massachusetts); his sisters, Mary Lee (Massachusetts) and Kathy Schneider (Florida); and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family members who brought him joy.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Len Umina.

Michael leaves behind much more than memories. He leaves the knowledge and skills he shared, the things he repaired, the gardens he grew, the places he traveled and, most importantly, the love he gave to his family. His life touched many people, and he will be deeply missed.

A memorial service celebrating Michael’s life will be held Oct. 3 from 10 a.m-noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Franklin. Burial will be private and will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may honor Michael by helping someone in need, sharing time with family or simply lending a helping hand — the way Michael so loved.
