Norma Macmillan
Norma Lee (Smith) Macmillan, 85, passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 3, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of David Jeffrey (Jeff) Macmillan, with whom she shared 66 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Maryland, Norma was the daughter of the late John Stanley and Mary Agnes Smith. Norma grew up in the house that her dad built in Eastport, Maryland. Norma’s father, John, was a master craftsman, building sailboats and homes while her mother, Mary, devoted her time to raising eight wonderful children and supporting the Methodist parish community.
Norma met Jeff, a dashing Navy sailor serving in Annapolis, while she was working at the soda counter at the local drugstore. Literally love at first site, they married two years later and moved north to Boston to forge a life brimming with family, love and amazing adventures over 68 blissful years together.
Norma spent the bulk of her career, 30 years, at Commonwealth Films, where she ran daily operations for Tom McCann’s business. Norma loved the fact that she could walk home for lunch every day, just around the corner on Newbury Street, to enjoy some food and catch up on an episode of “Days of Our Lives.” Norma moved to Hopkinton, Jeff’s hometown, in the early 1980s and commuted into Boston by train until she retired. During this time, she developed a lasting and loving bond with her fellow commuters, the famous “Trainiacs.”
Norma and Jeff shared a passion for music, dance and theater and were lifelong patrons of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Ballet. Norma loved traveling, enjoying many adventures across America, Nova Scotia, The British Isles, Europe and Africa.
She is survived by her husband, Jeff, of Hopkinton, her daughter, Linda (and husband Ed) Montagna in Brighton, and her son, David Macmillan (and wife, Anne-Marie) in England. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Daniel (and wife Tea), Lily (and husband Christian), Jodi (and husband Matthew) and Isobel, each of whom she loved and adored. Norma also is survived by her sister, Agnes Keen, in Maryland as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Norma was a friend to all and loved by the many who had the privilege to know her, love her, share her life and look after her along the way. Norma especially appreciated the care, empathy and dignity afforded to her by her Primary Care Physician and friend Dr. Kansra, the specialists at Dana-Farber and the lovely team at Milford Regional Hospital.
The funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 9 at 9:30 a.m. from the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home in Hopkinton. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Parish. Burial will follow in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Hopkinton. Visitation at the funeral home is Sunday, Nov. 8 from 1-4 p.m.
