Select Board to interview police chief finalists Tuesday

by | Nov 6, 2026 | Featured: News, News

Three candidates for the role of Hopkinton police chief will be interviewed by the Select Board at its meeting Tuesday.

Two of the candidates come from the Westborough Police Department. The third is Hopkinton’s interim chief, Scott van Raalten. All have more than 20 years of experience in policing.

Greg Schipporeit is a patrol lieutenant with the Westborough Police Department. He has held the role since 2024 and has supported functions including Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC) accreditation and oversight of the department’s Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) compliance, according to his resume.

Schipporeit started as a patrol officer in Westborough in 2018. He previously was a patrol agent in Lakewood, Colorado, from 2005-17. He earned a master’s of public administration (MPA) from Anna Maria College in 2020.

The other Westborough candidate, Cliff Luce, has been with the department since 2007. He worked his way up from police officer to administrative lieutenant, per his resume. He now serves as an administrative lieutenant with experience in operational management, capital budget planning and coordination with command staff. Prior to his tenure in Westborough, Luce worked for police departments in Warren and Brookfield.

Luce also holds an MPA from Anna Maria College.

Van Raalten has been with the Hopkinton Police Department since 2001. He moved up the ranks from patrolman to deputy chief. He was promoted to that role by the Select Board in 2024, and was selected to fill the role of interim chief in June.

Van Raalten holds a juris doctor degree from the Massachusetts School of Law and is admitted to the bar for the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, as well as the state bars of Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. He also holds a master’s degree in criminal justice administration from Western New England University.

The finalist chosen from the remaining three candidates will replace former HPD Chief Joseph Bennett. He retired in June after 35 years of police service, nearly all of which he spent in Hopkinton.

The effort to find these three finalists was the work of the Police Chief Screening Committee, a group of residents and town employees chosen by the Select Board to ensure public input in the hiring process. The committee was modeled after a similar body organized in the search for the Hopkinton Public Schools new superintendent last year.

Assistant Town Manager Lance DelPriore, who is part of the committee, told the Independent that he was limited to what he could discuss about the candidates. However, he praised the screening committee for its work on advancing three candidates to this point in the hiring process.

“It was a significant time investment, and having such a diverse group was very beneficial,” DelPriore stated. “I am also incredibly grateful to all those individuals who submitted applications and participated in the recruitment process, as it was no small effort on their part either.”
