The town has announced that it anticipates demolition of parts of the Center School campus will begin in December.
In a recent press release, the town stated that contractor American Environmental has secured the Center School site and is preparing to remove hazardous materials. Once the materials are removed, demolition can begin. The work is expected to take about three months.
Crews will remove the building’s 1950 and 1980 additions as part of the demolition work. Once the additions are demolished, the site will be leveled and stabilized to prepare for restoration of the original 1928 school building.
The town advised that while the project is underway, access to the property and the nearby walking trail will be closed. According to the release, the closure is required for public safety and as part of the contractor’s insurance requirements. Signs will be posted identifying the property as an active construction site with limited access to authorized personnel.
The press release notes that construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Signs along Ash Street will alert residents to the work, and all construction vehicles will be staged on the Center School property. No traffic interruptions are anticipated.
Once complete, the restored building will include space for the Parks & Recreation and Youth & Family Services departments. The Hopkinton Center for the Arts, which entered into a public-private partnership on the project, will have space in the building as well
