Hopkinton’s Parks & Recreation Department director, Jon Lewitus, will end his service to the town Wednesday after three years in the position.

In an interview last week, Lewitus said he has enjoyed his time in Hopkinton. His new position as director of the Sudbury Park and Recreation Department will allow him to be closer to his family.

On Tuesday, Lewitus issued the following statement to the Independent regarding his tenure and hopes for the department:

“Leaving Hopkinton Parks & Recreation is certainly bittersweet. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve this community and proud of what we have been able to accomplish together during my time as Director.

“When I look back on my tenure, I am proud of the visible accomplishments: the new pickleball and tennis courts at Fruit Street, the Hank Fredette Skate Park, improvements to Sandy Beach and the Dog Park, new programs and events, and continued investment in our parks and facilities. But what I will remember most are the people and relationships behind those accomplishments. I have had the opportunity to work with an incredibly dedicated staff, Commission members, fellow Town employees, community organizations, volunteers, coaches, families, and residents who genuinely care about Hopkinton.

“I am especially proud of the department’s growth and the work we have done to create a strong foundation for the future. Parks & Recreation is about much more than fields, facilities, and programs, it is about creating opportunities for people to connect, be active, build relationships, and feel a sense of community.

“For my successor, my hope is that they continue to build on that foundation while bringing their own ideas and vision to the department. I would encourage them to listen to the community, value and support the staff, continue developing strong partnerships throughout Town, and always remember the important role Parks & Recreation plays in people’s everyday lives.

“I will truly miss being part of the Hopkinton community and working with so many wonderful people. I leave very proud of what we accomplished together, thankful for the experiences and relationships I have gained, and excited to see what comes next for Hopkinton Parks & Recreation.”
