Whether you want to spruce up the grounds with mulch, build a fire pit or purchase a few yards of quality screened loam, you’ll find all your landscaping needs at Cook Forest Products, next door in Upton.

Cook Forest Products sells a large variety of mulches and ground cover to enhance and finish any residential or business landscape. Choose from premium hemlock, premium pine, hemlock blend, dark pine, midnight, redwood, eco-blend and safety blanket (formerly playground mulch). Detailed descriptions are available online. scape

The company strives to be fully stocked with the materials you need. If you don’t see the product you’re looking for, just ask for a sales representative. Their goal is to make Cook your one-stop shop for landscape projects.

Both mulch and loam products are made onsite. To make rich loam, for example, crew members regularly turn leaf and grass cuttings over and over during the winter, mixing in water and air and finally screening it.

The Cook crew consists of 22 full-time employees and a few seasonal part-timers. Kelly Butler has been a truck driver with the company for the past 13 years.

“We take pride in our deliveries to ensure customer satisfaction,” Butler said.

With spring’s arrival, there’s an inviting display area out front for folks to see sample designs using the granite, paver, specialty stone and gravel products available to make decorative or retaining walls, patios, raised garden beds and walkways.

In addition to typical business hours of Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Cook now is open on Saturdays, from 7 a.m. until noon. Seasonal Saturday hours hold through early October.

Owner Diane Cook spent the last five years working alongside her husband, Doug, who founded Cook Forest Products more than 25 years ago, learning the business until his sudden passing in 2018.

“Doug was practically in the business since he was a kid,” Diane reminisced fondly. “He purchased his first piece of heavy equipment during college, tackled the dangerous and difficult job of clearing land and built the company’s headquarters in Upton about 15 years ago. He’d probably done this work, in some form or another, for more than 35 years.”

Doug Cook believed in small businesses and hard work as critical components to a successful economy. That and keeping his customers happy. He was a good and fair boss, and greatly respected. Doug valued his employees’ commitment to a strong work ethic and exceptional customer service.

“I’m committed to moving forward with Doug’s vision,” Diane added, “as a way of honoring him and our staff who have been so loyal. And business has been growing, so I know we’re headed in the right direction.”
