Russell Shine

Russell A. “Russ” Shine, 78, of Whitinsville passed away on July 28, 2026, at Harrington Hospital in Southbridge after a long illness.

He is survived by his daughter, Anne-Marie Shine of Whitinsville and companion Dwayne of Douglas; his partner of 27 years, best friend and love of his life Marcia A. Stewart, with whom he lived; a son, Alan D. Stewart and life partner Michelle Drolet of Rindge, New Hampshire; two grandchildren, Zackary Jaskowiak of Whitinsville, and Casey J. Stewart and fiancé Sylvia Hope of Richmond, New Hampshire; a great-grandson, Michael Stewart; his brother, Harvey Shine and wife Barbara of Auburn; many nephews and nieces; his dear friend, John Dolber of Whitinsville; and his faithful dog, Jax. He was predeceased by his former wife, Peggy Hodgson Shine; his son, Seth Stewart; his brother, Richard Shine; and his sister, Barbara Shine.

Born in Newtonville on June 21, 1948, he was the son of Albert and Margaret “Peggy” (Jackson) Shine. He lived in Douglas for the past 42 years. He was raised in Hopkinton and had previously lived in Blackstone. Russ was educated at Hopkinton High School before attending trade school to become an automotive mechanic.

Russ owned and operated Shine’s Foreign Car Care in Whitinsville for 16 years, retiring in 2013. Prior to that, he worked at Little Town Workshop in Douglas and Atamian Motors in Worcester. Throughout his career, he specialized in working on Porsches, Volkswagens and Audis. He was especially proud of his 1986 Porsche Carrera, which, thanks to Marcia’s encouragement, he eventually purchased. He owned the car for 20 years and enjoyed taking it to the racetrack on occasion.

Russ was easygoing, likable and always the life of the party. He was the uncle everyone wanted and had a special way of connecting with people, especially children. He enjoyed camping and traveling extensively. Music was a significant part of his life, and he especially loved classic rock.

In accordance with his wishes, Russ will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 1-4 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Whitinsville. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Accord Adult Day, 10 Cudworth Road, Webster, MA 01570, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601, or online at donorservices.alz.org.
