Addy Walls drove in five runs, including four on a grand slam, and delivered another strong pitching performance to lead the Hopkinton High School softball team to a 12-2 victory over visiting Westwood in the quarterfinals of the Division 2 state tournament Saturday.

The second-seeded Hillers, now 20-3, advance to the semifinals to play the winner of Sunday’s game between sixth-seeded Tewksbury and third-seeded Bedford. (Update: Hopkinton will play Bedford on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Worcester State University.)

Seventh-seeded Westwood (15-5) took an early lead when Bridget Mulkeen crushed a two-run home run to center with two outs in the first inning. But it was all Hopkinton after that, as the hosts scored in every inning.

In the bottom of the first, Ashley Callery ripped an RBI single to center field to score Charlotte Holden, who had doubled.

In the second, with two outs, Walls laced a ground-rule double to left. Pinch-runner Kate Riesenberger took third on a passed ball. Zoe Le Vine then walked. With Holden up, Zoe Le Vine stole second, and Riesenberger scored on the catcher’s throw across the diamond to tie the game.

In the third, Holly Paharik led off with a walk and stole second. One out later, Caroline Ozmun ripped a liner to the right side that went off the first baseman’s mitt for an RBI single. Pinch-runner Elena Valis took second on a groundout by Zoe Adams and, when the Wolverines threw to second looking to catch her off the bag, raced to third. Valis then scored on a wild pitch with Ava Davenport batting, and the Hillers had a 4-2 lead.

In the fourth, Callie Arthur led off with a walk and stole second. Walls followed with a walk, and Riesenberger took first as a pinch-runner. Two outs later, with Paharik up, the Wolverines caught Riesenberger off first and she ended up in a rundown. However, Riesenberger was able to get back to the bag safely, and Arthur ran home in the meantime to make it 5-2.

In the fifth, Ozmun was hit by a pitch to lead things off, and Valis returned as a pinch runner. After Valis stole second, Adams walked and Davenport squibbed an infield single to the second baseman, loading the bases. After a fielder’s choice grounder with the runner being thrown out at home, Walls hit a grand slam over the fence in left center to break things open.

In the sixth, Ozmun led off with a single and was replaced by Valis. Adams followed with a walk. Davenport then hit a single that deflected off the third baseman’s glove, and Valis scored. Arthur then dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score another run, and Walls followed with an RBI single to make it 12-2.

Walls allowed just four hits in the game, two coming in the opening inning.

The game started at 7 p.m., an hour late due to rainy conditions.
