Sports roundup: Simoes earns spot in Mass. Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame

Hopkinton High School baseball coach Steve Simoes, who guided the Hillers to the Division 2 state championship game the past two seasons, was named to the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame 2022 class. …

Shawn Mato was named coach of the HHS alpine ski team for this season. An Idaho native, Mato skied competitively in high school in New Jersey and then at the University of New Hampshire. A U.S. Ski Level 100 coach, Mato has been coaching various ski teams since 1999 and currently coaches for the Franconia Ski Club at Cannon Mountain in New Hampshire.

Former Hillers have collegiate success

Hopkinton’s Lexi Hasbrouck, a sophomore on the Trinity College women’s soccer team, was named to the New England Small College Athletic Association first team based on her play this fall.

Hasbrouck started all 16 games in the backfield for the Bantams, who finished at 7-8-1 overall and 3-6-1 in NESCAC play. …

Sydney MacDonald received Liberty League honorable mention after playing 17 games for the Vassar College women’s soccer team. The junior midfielder had a team-high 15 starts and recorded a goal in a 2-1 victory over Montclair State on Sept. 8. …

Natalie Shambo was named a Scholastic All American by National Collegiate Rugby for her play on the Endicott College spring 7’s team last season. Shambo, who graduated summa cum laude in May with a degree in nursing, also played with the fall 15’s all four years at the school. She was a co-captain as a senior. Shambo now works as a registered nurse for UMass Memorial Hospital in Marlborough.
