I-495 fire

PHOTO/WESTBOROUGH FIRE DEPARTMENT

A tractor-trailer burst into flames Monday night on Interstate 495 in Hopkinton, and an explosion could be heard for miles.

The incident took place on the southbound side of the highway prior to Exit 54 (West Main Street), according to the Westborough Fire Department, and caused the road to be closed.

Some trees on the side of the road caught fire and were put down by multiple fire crews. The area borders the Patriots Boulevard development in Hopkinton.

Update, Tuesday 3:30 p.m.: According to Fire Chief Bill Miller, the trailer was empty. The explosion people heard was from the tires exploding. The driver was not injured.

There was a brush fire that was put out within a couple of hours. Multiple towns’ engines responded to the call, and water had to be trucked in.
