WFD garbage truck fire

A trash truck traveling on Interstate 495 in Westborough near the Hopkinton border burst into flames early Friday morning, causing a fuel spill and traffic delays when part of I-495 North in Hopkinton had to be closed for the cleanup.

The Westborough Fire Department’s Engine 4 responded to the fire near I-495 and Flanders Road in Westborough at around 3 a.m., according to the department’s Facebook page.

“Firefighters also located a large fuel spill upon arrival due to this incident,” according to the post.

Mutual aid resources were used for the water supply, and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection was notified for assistance because of the fuel leak.

Firefighters cleared the scene at around 6 a.m., but there were delays during the morning commute. WBZ reported that the cleanup resulted in the right lane being closed, with traffic jammed back onto West Main Street.

No further information was available at press time.
