Hopkinton Today: Wednesday, Feb. 10

by | Feb 10, 2021 | Hopkinton Today

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a video or two to brighten your morning.

At Tuesday’s Select Board meeting, concerns about the logistics surrounding Annual Town Meeting due to the pandemic were raised, and the issue will be revisited after a subgroup discusses it. Also at Tuesday’s meeting, budget discussions continued, the town’s facilities director provided an update on issues at Center School, and the board paid tribute to Richard Brault, a well-known veteran who passed away over the weekend, as well as longtime resident and volunteer John Palmer, who resigned from the Tax Relief Committee due to his move to Ashland.

Hopkinton High School junior Kate Powers, a shot putter for the girls indoor track and field team, has had to adjust to more than the pandemic-forced rules changes this season. After being diagnosed with bone chips in her right elbow, she learned to throw lefty in order to compete this winter. The results have been impressive.

The Hopkinton Center for the Arts’ member show, titled “The Big Tent,” opened this past Friday and runs through March 15 at the HCA’s Lotvin Family Gallery as well as online. The HCA also is taking registrations for its Valentine’s Day singing telegram fundraiser. For $25, an individual can have a personalized version of a famous song sung by an HCA instructor and sent via email and text message on Valentine’s Day this Sunday. Deadline to order is Saturday. Visit the HCA website for more information.

Project Just Because is hosting a free food distribution day this Saturday at its Hopkinton facility for all Massachusetts residents in need. Anyone needing assistance or aware of someone who needs help with food — including protein, dairy, dry goods, bakery and gluten-free options — can stop by 109 South St. and select free items between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Town meetings today include the Historical Commission (2 p.m.), Housing Authority (6) and Board of Appeals (7).
