Sophomores Joe Carrazza and Pavit Mehra recorded two goals and an assist apiece as the Hopkinton High School boys hockey team skated past Ashland, 6-2, in a Wednesday afternoon game at Loring Arena in Framingham.

The Hillers improved to 7-2 heading into Thursday morning’s finale at Medfield.

Carrazza opened the scoring midway through the opening half, poking home the rebound of a Cole Dixon shot from the point.

Three minutes later, and with Hopkinton on the penalty kill, Mehra stole the puck in the offensive zone, eluded a pair of defenders, and lifted a backhander into the net. Carrazza picked up an assist.

With 4:44 left in the period, Carrazza set up in the left slot and took a pass from Mike Berman at the right point. After having his first shot turned away, Carrazza scored on the rebound.

Mehra put on a clinic for the Hillers’ fourth goal. He brought the puck up ice, skated into the offensive zone, took a run around the net and returned to the high slot, where he wristed a shot that hit the goalie’s pads and then trickled behind him and over the line.

Ashland ended the shutout with 2:41 left in the first on a hard wrist shot by Nick Fish, making it 4-1 heading into the break.

Early in the second half, Mehra put pressure on the Ashland defense. The puck was poked away and ended up on the stick of Vasilii Zolotarev in the left slot. Zolotarev went to his backhand and lifted the puck into the net for a nifty finish.

Senior Caleb Dacey capped the Hillers’ scoring when he stole the puck deep in the Ashland zone and reached out with one hand to poke the puck through the goalie’s legs with 5:51 left. It was Dacey’s first career goal and it set off a celebration on the HHS bench.

Fish scored for Ashland with 41 seconds left for the final tally.

Sophomore Jack Lang made 21 saves in the Hopkinton goal to earn the win.
