Future college athletes recognized

by | May 15, 2019 | Sports

Hopkinton High School students who have committed to playing a sport in college recently gathered to be recognized by the school.

The Hopkinton High School class of 2019 has turned out a school-record 31 students who have committed to playing a sport in college.

The students were recognized at a recent breakfast hosted by HHS athletic director Dee King.

“The work ethic that you possess, the commitment that you’ve had, is unparalleled,” King told the students. “It’s not an easy thing to do.”

Guest speaker Mark Ostrander, a former Hillers baseball and football standout who went on to play baseball at the University of Maine, was the guest speaker, and he offered the future collegians some advice on how to navigate the next four years.

“Don’t let the outcomes in competition define your experience in college,” Ostrander said, noting that he struggled at the plate his freshman year before adjusting and having much more success his last three years. “Brace yourself and get ready for maybe a little bit of adversity. It’s something that I think definitely makes you stronger.”

The student-athletes are: Caitlyn Abbott (Western University cheer), Mia Ardila (Cal State-Los Angeles volleyball), Cory Bannon (Wheaton lacrosse), Jack Brennan (Norwich diving), Natalie Calkins (Merrimack lacrosse), Theo Cavallo (Western New England football), Grace Cavanaugh (Occidental swimming), Luke D’Aloia (Colby football), Tyler Dougherty (Kenyon football), Anna Feng (Penn swimming), Zachary Frank (Sacred Heart lacrosse), Cole Glassburn (Catholic baseball), Megan Halloran (Assumption golf), Kaitlyn Holly (Manhattan softball), Abby Jaye (Stonehill golf), Ryan Kelleher (Sale Regina football), Brendan Kelly (Stonehill baseball), Olivia Kirshy (Salve Regina ice hockey), Sydney MacDonald (Vassar soccer), Ben McKenzie (Bowdoin baseball), Corinne Messier (Bentley soccer), Lucas Moynahan (Salve Regina football), Andrew Palleiko (MIT lacrosse), Ben Powers (Norwich football), Lydia Rudden (Stonehill lacrosse), Steve Simoes (Bowdoin baseball), Kyle Stukel (Salve Regina football), Brianna Tocco (URI diving), Gabrielle Weilding (UMass-Lowell soccer) and Emily Whelan (UMass softball). Additionally, Lillian Morningstar will play basketball but has yet to decide on a school.
