Employees of South Street business recognized for saving man stuck under car

Three employees of 1-800-GOT-JUNK are being recognized for freeing an injured man who was pinned under a car on South Street this past Sunday evening.

Jayden Aponte, Marcos Santiago and Matt Pace were pulling into the parking lot of their office at 100 South Street when they heard a loud bang and then someone screaming for help, according to a report from Boston’s WBZ-TV.

A 27-year-old man who was trying to fix a loose exhaust pipe had become trapped when the jack holding up the car gave out. The car crushed his face and left him stuck.

“I saw his legs kind of moving and that’s when we realized the car had fell on top of him,” Santiago told WBZ. “We all ran over there and the first thing we did was just grab underneath the car and lifted it — enough for him to be able to turn around and come out [from under] the car.”

Added Pace: “People say adrenaline is rushing through you and you get an insane amount of strength. It’s true.”

Aponte said he handed the man his work shirt and told him to keep pressure on his face, which was “really bloody.”

An ambulance soon arrived to take the man to the hospital.

The man, who did not want to be identified, wrote in an email to WBZ that he had surgery on his face. He also expressed thanks to his rescuers.

“Was it not for your swift and timely response to my cry for help I would have been stuck under that car much longer and who knows what could have happened if I wasn’t rescued on time?” he wrote.

“I deeply appreciate you all, words really cannot be sufficient to express my gratitude toward this heroic act,” he said, adding, “Because of you all, I am on a swifter road to recovery and I can’t wait to thank you all personally.”
