Hopkinton’s Hervol set to play in U.S. Open

Hopkinton’s Jimmy Hervol is set to debut on golf’s biggest stage this week with an appearance in the 121st U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. The competition runs Thursday through Sunday.

Hervol qualified by finishing with a 5-under-par 136 over 36 holes in the tournament’s final qualifier earlier this month in Purchase, New York. He finished second of 79 participants, with the top four advancing to the U.S. Open.

The 23-year-old Hervol, who completed a standout career at UConn in 2019, has been playing on the Minor League Golf Tour.

According to the starting times announced Tuesday morning by the United States Golf Association (USGA), Hervol will tee off at 11:57 a.m. (ET) on Thursday and 5:42 p.m. on Friday (final group of the day). His threesome includes fellow first-time qualifiers Hayden Springer of Texas and Roy Cootes of California.

The tournament is a four-round, 72-hole stroke-play championship, meaning the lowest score over the four rounds wins. After the first two days, the field of 156 will be trimmed to the top 60 plus ties.
