Letter to the Editor: Lower speeds on West Main

by | Dec 16, 2021 | Letter to Editor

There has been much discussion about how dangerous West Main Street is in front of Cumberland Farms. No left turn could help, but I haven’t heard any discussion about lowering the speed limit in that stretch of roadway. I’ve observed drivers merging from 495 onto West Main toward town and never slowing down — they don’t need to when the speed limit is 40 mph. When traveling east or west I automatically slow down because I live in town and know the perils of driving through that area. Visitors coming off 495 or cutting through town likely aren’t familiar with it but are adhering to the speed limit. I think a good start would be to decrease the speed limit to 30 mph through that stretch of town to slow people down and create more awareness. It’s only going to get worse with another gas station opening up in the near future.

— Sara Mayo, Hopkinton
