HHS Sports Roundup: Powers wins weight throw at Millrose Games; boys basketball triumphs at Medway

Competing at the 114th Millrose Games in New York City on Thursday, Hopkinton High school standout Kate Powers won the girls weight throw competition.

Powers, a senior, recorded identical throws of 43 feet, 2 1/2 inches on her first two attempts, then won the title with a toss of 48-1 1/4 on her third throw. She recorded a distance of 46-8 on her fourth and final throw.

Powers’ next closest competitor, Avians Rezendes from Providence, Rhode Island, had a top throw of 44-11 3/4. …

In action from Friday (prior to the storm that forced postponement of all events Saturday and Sunday), boys basketball won at Medway 51-40. Sam Pantera led the way with 15 points, and fellow sophomore Jack Ianelli, making his first start at point guard, contributed 12 points. …

Also Friday, girls basketball fell to Medway, 52-47, boys hockey fell to Medway, 3-1, and the girls hockey co-op team fell to Medfield, 7-0. …

The boys swimming and diving team dropped a 91-78 decision to Weston. Highlights for HHS included sectional-qualifying performances from Davis Peishoff (100 butterfly), Caleb Burke (100 backstroke), the medley relay team of Burke, Shawn Haley, Peishoff and Tyler Fallon, and the 200 free relay of Kevin Gu, Haley, Peishoff and Fallon. …

On Thursday, the girls alpine ski team raced to second place on Thursday at Ski Ward. Klara Niss led the way with a sixth-place finish while Libby Herlihy took 14th and Lila Mato was 15th. The boys finished seventh, led by Jake Lacoche (13th).
