HHS Sports Roundup: Baseball, tennis teams bow out of postseason

by | Jun 12, 2022 | Sports

The Hopkinton High School baseball team ended its season with a 7-6 loss to host Mansfield in a Division 2 quarterfinal game on Saturday afternoon.

The sixth-seeded Hillers fell behind 2-0 after one inning, but Joe Carrazza tied things up with a long, bases-loaded single down the line in left field in the second, scoring Andrew Gaughan and Joe Scardino. However, third-seeded Mansfield answered with a three-run home run to center field in the bottom of the inning from starting pitcher Jimmy Gilleran. The Hornets added a run in the fourth to make it 6-2.

Hopkinton got one back in the fifth as Carrazza reached base on a wild pitch after striking out, advanced to second on a walk to Scott Pagliuca, stole third and then scored on a groundout by Nick Paharik.

In the sixth, Charlie Simulis singled and Pagliuca walked. One out later, Carrazza ripped a two-run single to center to trim the deficit to 6-5.

Mansfield plated an insurance run in the sixth, which proved vital as Hopkinton scored once in the seventh, when Simulis singled to drive in Charlie Petruney. The Hillers had the potential tying run on second when the game ended on a groundout. …

Girls tennis dropped a 3-2 decision to Westwood on Friday to close out its season. …

HHS boys tennis saw its season come to an end Friday with a 5-0 loss to Duxbury in the Division 2 quarterfinals.
