Parks & Rec Commission discusses band selection for summer concert series

The Parks & Recreation Commission discussed finalizing the selections for this summer’s Concert on the Common series during its meeting Tuesday night.
Parks & Rec Director Jon Lewitus noted that five of seven total acts had been selected already. He and Laura Hanson — who maintains responsibility for booking the summer concert program — wanted the commission’s feedback on how to finish filling out the schedule.
Hanson explained that part of what was holding up filling the remaining slots was Parks & Rec’s updated application process. Certain bands that are series regulars have been difficult to lock down as a result.
Chair Dan Terry questioned why Parks & Rec was making decisions on bands, given the official application process does not close until Monday.
“There are regulars, and some we have to have, like the Hopkinton Music Association,” Hanson explained.
“Most of the bands reach out to me by January,” she added.
Among the remaining acts under consideration are pop band Antarctica, an Eagles tribute band called The Long Run and the Hit the Bus Band, which plays music from the sixties and seventies.
After further discussion, the commission directed Lewitus and Hanson to hold a slot for one of the regular acts that has yet to respond while they wait to hear back.
“We’ll give [them] a week to respond and then we’ll pick from the remaining three that we have for the last spot,” Lewitus confirmed.

The Friends of Hopkinton is hosting its next monthly meeting Feb. 10 in the basement of Town Hall. Residents of any age are welcome to join.
