Hopkinton Today for Monday, July 14: ‘Good Trouble’ protest on Town Common set for Thursday

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Resident organizes rally on Town Common as part of national protest

Hopkinton resident Nancy McBride has organized a peaceful protest on the Town Common this Thursday with sponsorship from the Hopkinton Democratic Town Committee. The theme of the event, “Good Trouble Lives On,” honors the life and work of the late congressional leader and civil rights activist Rep. John Lewis.

The event is special to McBride in particular because it is the first protest she’s ever organized.

“I’m new to all this,” she said.

McBride explained she felt compelled to action because of the current state of the world. “I started recently getting upset when I watched the news, and I felt like I had to do something,” she said.

After attending some regional protests, including one of the many No Kings protests earlier in June and a Hands Off! event in Holliston this past April, McBride said she wanted to see more political action in Hopkinton. So when the opportunity to host a rally in town presented itself, she took it.

Thursday’s rally on the Town Common is one of hundreds taking place across the country that day. According to the event page, Good Trouble Lives On is described as “a national day of nonviolent action” to respond to actions undertaken by the Trump administration.

A key of these rallies is nonviolent action, a point McBride made sure to emphasize. She also encouraged people of all political affiliations to join the protest.

“I don’t care what your views are, I think the world is in chaos right now and we need to respond to what’s happening,” she said.

The learning curve for figuring out how to set up a protest in town was a challenge for McBride. She credited both the Hopkinton Police Department and HDTC chair Amy Groves for helping her through the process.

“I’m so grateful to Amy for all of her help,” said McBride. “I’m happy for the assistance.”

The Good Trouble rally begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday at the Town Common. Protestors are encouraged to bring signs that match the theme of “Good Trouble Lives On.” Those looking for more information and to sign up to attend can visit the event page.

This looks like some people just wants to cause more chaos in this country. Why don’t we have an event that everyone can feel comfortable to attend to support our country with positive conversation and action.

Let’s be about America and stop the hatred and anger!

Wow. As organizer of this event, so sad you have misconstrued all my intentions. Read up on John Lewis and his vast contributions to American History.
