A popular civics teacher and baseball coach at Hopkinton Middle School apparently was involved in a serious motorcycle accident, according to a GoFundMe page.
The GoFundMe fundraiser for teacher Bill Mingace was started four days ago by an individual identifying himself as Mingace’s cousin, Vinny Collotta. It states that “[r]ecently, Bill was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident.
“Thankfully, he’s now on the road to recovery, but it’s going to take time,” Collotta added. “Bill suffered multiple broken bones and will be out of work for a while as he focuses on healing. Despite everything, he’s staying positive and in great spirits.”
The Independent reached out to Collotta for comment Tuesday afternoon but did not get an immediate response.
Via email Tuesday evening, HPS superintendent Evan Bishop shared the following message regarding Mingace:
“What I can say is that Bill is an excellent educator and an even better person,” he stated. “He’s deeply respected by students, colleagues, and families alike, and we’re all hoping to see him back as soon as possible.”
As of 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, the GoFundMe had received $3,040 in donations. The fundraiser’s goal is $15,000. Money raised will go toward Mingace’s “medical expenses and daily needs during this challenging time,” the post states.
In 2022, the Independent reported that Mingace visited Greece with about 25 other educators, librarians, artists and writers in his first trip abroad. He was part of a group of participants in “The Examined Life.” This professional development program conducts annual study tours to Greece. It explores the country’s history, literature and philosophy through the Socratic method of critical thinking. In the article, Mingace told the Independent that he would incorporate his firsthand learning “about the birthplace of democracy” into his civics classes.
