Fall schedule likely for Sandy Beach paving project

Parks & Recreation Director Jon Lewitus informed the Parks & Recreation Commission on Tuesday that a capital project to pave the Sandy Beach parking lot would not begin until the fall.
During his director’s report, Lewitus told the commission that he had received proposals for the project from engineering firms Tighe & Bond and Weston & Sampson. He noted that both firms had informed him that all preliminary work prior to construction could be completed by Aug. 31.
“We’re looking most likely at early fall for this project to move forward,” Lewitus explained. “That’s if everything goes to plan with the water/sewer management part of this.”
In order to complete the project, Parks & Rec needs to coordinate with the Department of Public Works and the Facilities & Engineering Department. The project is anticipated to take 3-4 weeks to complete because crews need to fix the lot’s drainage.
During a meeting in February, commission members had expressed concerns about the coordination with those departments to get the project done in a timely manner.
The primary concern at that meeting was a projected springtime start to the project and its completion prior to Sandy Beach opening for the season. While the fall schedule alleviates some of those concerns, the commission still voiced its concern.
“We have to be really intentional about the dates that time of year,” stressed vice chair Kyle Smith.
Lewitus noted he planned to speak with DPW Director Kerry Reed and town engineer Dave Daltorio about the project as he wraps up final touches and moves the project into the procurement phase.
