Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Three siblings from Hopkinton recently raised over $3,000 for cancer research by taking part in a children’s ride for the Pan-Mass Challenge.

Parker, Mikaela and Khloe Canby rode together in the Franklin PMC Kids Ride on June 7. The event raised money for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. According to its website, the ride is designed to give kids the opportunity to work together and contribute toward cancer work undertaken by Dana-Farber and “also teaches children the value of riding for the benefit of others.”

“They had fun,” said their mom, Heidi Cheng. “They had a good time.”

Cheng and her family are familiar with Dana-Farber’s cancer work. She shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and received support from the institute. It subsidized her cold cap — a therapy designed to help reduce hair loss caused by chemotherapy — and provided her chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy.

Cheng added that she now is cancer-free but still is managing side effects of the treatment while having to navigate the challenges of the healthcare system. She credited her husband, Taylor Canby, and her kids for their support throughout her cancer diagnosis and treatment.

This is the second year the Canby kids have participated in the Franklin PMC ride. Last year they took in a total of $3,504, and this year they managed to raise $3,288. Cheng said they first learned about another PMC race happening in Wakefield a few years ago and decided they wanted to participate.

To raise funds this year, they reached out to family and friends both in Hopkinton and Hong Kong, where Cheng and her husband moved from to Hopkinton five years ago. The kids also solicited donations outside Trader Joe’s. Cheng recounted that during one of those outings, an individual emptied their wallet to contribute toward the kids’ fundraising goal.

“We got close to $700 in about 90 minutes outside Trader Joe’s,” Cheng stated in a follow-up message.

Given the success of the previous rides, the family has been looking into starting a PMC kids event in Hopkinton. Cheng stated that she was trying to get it off the ground this year, but complications with renovations on Loop Road delayed the plans. A lot of planning also is involved with setting up the race, which she noted has been difficult to balance with her recovery.

Overall, the family hopes to get more people interested and involved with the fundraiser. “Our goal is just to raise awareness of this kids’ ride,” Cheng said.
