Hopkinton Today: Thursday, Aug. 27

by | Aug 27, 2020 | Hopkinton Today, Z-Lead Image Front Page

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a video or two to brighten your morning.

The Hopkinton High School Diversity Club is sponsoring a community-wide event called Chalk It Up next Wednesday, Sept. 2. On that day from 2-4 p.m. residents are encouraged to use chalk to create messages of diversity, inclusivity and kindness on their driveways and sidewalks.

The town’s latest COVID-19 update shows that there now are four active cases in town. The report also has information on a Back to School Town Hall event taking place tonight.

Congressional candidate Jesse Mermell (above, in white jacket) paid a visit to Hopkinton yesterday morning to campaign with, among others, state Rep. Carolyn Dykema (left). Mermell is part of a crowded field running for the 4th Congressional District seat being vacated by Joe Kennedy. The Democratic field includes Jake Auchincloss, Becky Grossman, Alan Khazei, Ihssane Leckey, Natalia Linos and Ben Sigel. Dave Cavell and Chris Zannetos are on the ballot as well, but both announced they were suspending their campaigns and backing Mermell. On the Republican side, Julie Hall is running against David Rosa. The primary election is Sept. 1, although early in-person voting is going on this week at the Senior Center.

The Planning Board meets today (5:30) to have another discussion about withholding some of its articles on the warrant for Town Meeting. Also tonight, the Appropriation Committee meets at 6, the Community Preservation Committee meets at 7, and the School Committee has an executive session scheduled for 7.

Photo of the Day: Winter Street was closed for part of the morning yesterday while a crew removed a dead tree.
