Hopkinton voters favor Mermell, Markey

by | Sep 7, 2020 | News

The Sept. 1 primary election drew 3,790 Democrats, 724 Republicans, 10 Libertarians and four Green-Rainbow members in Hopkinton (although the latter two parties had no candidates on the ballot).

Town clerk Connor Degan reported that approximately 4,000 residents — 32 percent of the town’s eligible voters — had requested mail-in ballots.

In the crowded race for the 4th Congressional District, on the Democratic side, Jesse Mermell received 826 votes in town, Jake Auchincloss 759, Becky Grossman 594, Natalia Linos 471, Ihssane Leckey 427, Alan Khazei 340, Christopher Zannetos 95, David Cavell 38 and Benjamin Sigel 23. Auchincloss was eventually declared the winner on Friday, three days after the balloting ended, taking a narrow victory over Mermell.

On the Republican side, winner Julie Hall received 461 votes and David Rosa garnered 228.

In the race for U.S. Senate, in the Democratic primary Hopkinton cast 2,010 votes for winner Ed Markey and 1,751 votes for Joe Kennedy.

For the Republicans, winner Kevin O’Connor received 448 votes to 265 for Shiva Ayyadurai.

State Sen. Karen Spilka and Rep. Carolyn Dykema, both Democrats, ran unopposed. The Republicans did not have any candidates in the primary.
