After hearing no opposition from the public, the Board of Health on Thursday night voted unanimously to adopt regulations prohibiting the sale of kratom and synthetic THC products in Hopkinton.
The vote came after a brief public hearing at the Hopkinton Senior Center. A handful of residents showed up to voice their support for the proposed regulations.
Resident Paula Haas stated she was “aghast” that products featuring kratom were available for purchase in town. “I hope that the regulations will be adopted,” she concluded.
Kratom is an extract from a tropical tree native to South Asia. Its traditional use involves chewing the leaf of the tree that has a weak form of the chemical. According to the Food and Drug Administration, some utilize the plant as treatment for pain, coughing, diarrhea, anxiety, depression and opioid use/withdrawal.
Extracts of the plant have a much higher dose of the tree’s chemical compounds and often are added to energy drinks. In its extracted form, kratom can cause liver toxicity, seizures and substance abuse disorder, according to the FDA.
Synthetic cannabinoids, which often are added to vaping products as a cheaper alternative to cannabis, also carry severe health risks.
Public health nurse Simone Carter, speaking in her capacity as a resident, said she was in support of the regulations. She noted concerns for her children in relation to kratom and synthetic cannabinoids. Carter also said she has family members who have dealt with “very bad health outcomes” in relation to these products.
“I state as a resident that I am fully aware of and in support of the actions … to protect the public health at large,” she said.
Additional support for the regulation was provided by Colleen Souza, a Hopkinton Youth & Family Services social worker also involved with Hopkinton Organizing for Prevention.
Following the public hearing, the Board of Health adopted the new regulations. They will go into effect July 30.
The new policy prohibits the manufacturing, distribution or sale of synthetic cannabinoids or kratom products in Hopkinton. Those in violation could face a fine of $1,000. Subsequent violations face additional fines and the suspension of permits issued by the Board of Health, including tobacco permits.
Thursday’s vote also amended language in the town’s regulations for permitting tobacco product sales. As a result, retailers must comply with all federal, state and local laws, rules, regulations and requirements when selling tobacco and related products. Health Director Shaun McAuliffe explained during a previous Board of Health meeting that this would prevent retail stores from selling anything not approved by the FDA and other governing bodies.
In a follow-up interview, Board of Health chair Nasiba Mannan thanked both residents and non-residents who shared their stories and support for the regulation throughout the process. She added that the board felt “very confident” with the regulation after reviewing all related scientific information, public input and legal considerations.
“We hope this makes the town healthier [and] keeps our children safer,” she said.
Hopkinton joins a growing number of area communities moving to regulate these products in their towns. Marlborough became the fifth municipality in the state to ban kratom last October. Ashland also is preparing to implement regulations, according to an agenda from its most recent Board of Health meeting.
Mannan expressed hope that legislators at the State House will begin working on passing laws related to these substances. “I know there are some bills they are reviewing,” she said.
I’ve done the Kratoms and Kratoms is bad I never knew the long term affects of this drug it about killed me. I suffered withdrawal so bad from this I once went to the er 3 times in one day from the withdrawal. I was withdrawing so bad they had to put me on Suboxones and they wanted me to take 4 pills a day but my insurance only covers 2 pills a day and I been on Suboxone almost 8 months now and probably will have to be the rest of my life. Kratoms are the worst thing I ever been on since my addiction to pain killers the best thing about the painkillers addiction is at least I knew wat I was putting in my body and it’s safer than the kratoms. I’ve been using it on and off without addiction or a single health issue well over 10 years now. 70H should be better regulated and quit being sold at gas stations. Treat it like THC. I’m a nurse at a detox and we have a ton of patients coming in to get off of 7oh lately. We use a methadone taper 95% of the time but sometime will use Subutex. These people are as sick as fentanyl users. As soon as this ban goes into effect we’re going to have a lot more people coming to detox.

While kratom products with high levels of 7-oh that are concentrated in high volumes are a dangerous trend how ever tradition leaf kratom with its very low 7-oh concentrations is a very safe supplement that has saved many lives and blanketing it in with the other dangerous products being sold as kratom or kratom synthetics with super high levels of 7-oh reckless and going to cause a much bigger problem on the future with illicit drug use and crime along with upticks in death because people who have responsibility used leaf kratom for years with be forced to get back on harsh oppiates or even worse.

Unfortunately my daughter boyfriend is highly addicted to this kratom drink for at least 2.5 years or more &from it being around my daughter, she started drinking it. I have been in chronic pelvic and back pain for years. I always wished there was a magic pill that was natural for pain. *This is my story on how I got addicted yto 7OH*. I walk into the vape store to get a vape and am hearing this little old man talk about how “these pills are giving me my life back, I don’t remember life without back pain, (then he starts crying) saying “I am happy again, this has been the biggest weight off my shoulders, I’m so happy and grateful for these pills that I am crying). So he leaves, I ask for my vape and what pills was that man is talking about? He perks up and starts explaining, “it’s completely natural, you could be pain-free in 15 minutes. There is no thc in it so you will never be be paranoid. It’s like a pain pill but all natural and then now I know they did the “here is a free ‘sample scam’ on me. I went home my husband,3yo son and my mom came over for dinner. So I’m telling them all about it excited, they both seemed interested and my mom thought it was probably too good to be true. Read about it online and it said could be habit forming. So I said I was going to try s fourth of a 20mg pill. We’ll omg 5 minutes extreme period pain goes away and the euphoria feeling came. I yelled omg! It actually works i can’t believe that my wish about the magic pill is actually real, then I start crying tears of joy. Well then I started taking it everyday bc I didn’t have to be in pain non stop ever again. Hindsight, I was completely naive, thought for just a couple red flags vs. all the pros I foolishly thought at the time, this was wonderful. It was, the first couple months. Started daily 20 mg of course I was addicted to it, while also telling myself I wasn’t because it is from a natural plant and if it was bad or dangerous, it would never be legal to sell. Life goes on doses get higher and higher as does the cost omg! That was it i was probably taking 600mg a day! Then last November (in Ohio) overnight a bill passed to ban all 7OH products. Classifying it to a certain way too extreme _drug rating. Including an extreme fine and jail time. I thought this was not right for him to do this overnight. The cops had to watch ALL of the store owners trash every single product in turn basically throwing thousands and thousands worth of 7OH. My husband went to pick up a bottle and he told my husband everything, how they threatened him and every store owner with years on jail and tens of thousands of dollars in fines. The guy said of course im pissed about basically throwing thousands in the trash, but im scared for my customers more. I know people who come in everyday that spends 500.00. What are they going to do? They are going through withdrawal now or until they run out. Ironically the reason for banning it was bc a woman’s husband shot himself in the head bc he couldn’t take the withdrawal. He said im so upset bc this worse than if it were a real pain pill. My husband said it seemed like he knew other people wouldn’t be able to handle withdrawal and do the same. So by late morning I was already going through withdrawal, the diarrhea, excessive sweating, nasea. So my husband took me to Michigan i got like 600.00 worth of 7OH products and the plan was to taper down. I tried my best ( my husband was obviously completely done with all of this which I don’t blame him at all. So Its now December and I was going through complete withdrawal, it was one of the worst things of my life, and if you were part of my family or friend you would probably be shocked to hear this bc I have been through hell and back, so they would probably just think I was over reacting. In reality the mental part was the worst, couldn’t sleep,eat for 5 days. The amount of anxiety, complete misery, feeling of doom to me it felt like I was in fight or flight mode 24/7. I was petrified, I had a grand mal seizure which I was scared was going to happen bc I have controlled epilepsy. Then one day I passed out over and over, I couldn’t walk anymore so I had to crawl or army crawl. The best way to honestly describe the feeling is I felt like I was on the 100th floor of a tall building and its on fire, there’s no way to get through the fire. So you open the window are halfway out the window to fall or go into the fire. I was taking small doses throughout withdrawal. I was out of the worst part but getting better. Then I slowly got back into it after all that time and drove PA so disappointed in myself. But there really is no help unless you have the money to go through rehab, or what call the crisis line? What the hell are they going to do? After months of trying and trying to taper down which I did, it just was that second to last drop I couldn’t get past. I couldn’t go through anymore poison. The feeling of guilt weighs so heavy on you. Im letting my family and myself down, wasting so much money and could be spending more time with my son I will never be able to forgive myself. So I was done I asked my psychiatrist to see if he could help me and tjank god he did. He put me on suboxone. I’m proud and happy to say last night I hit 2 weeks clean and haven’t looked back.

Kratom is bad news my wife for 40 years walked out on me two years ago and we’re in the middle of a divorce she got addicted to it and when I tried to put a stop to it because I seen what it was doing to her I’d find them on the floor in the laundry she almost became zombie like and when I tried to put my foot down about it she walked out. Thanks for your comment. I’m 76. I’ve been using kratom leaf for several years. I had bad migraines so I tried kratom that a friend had suggested. Relief. I’ve used it for pain, anxiety. NEVER tried any of the hybrids, etc. I buy from reputable sellers. ETHA is the most reliable producer. Tested etc. For Big Pharma, it’s all about $$$, keeping us sick.
The fda is one person. I think it could be made legal with some adjustments. People fail to realize too that now that that’s illegal people will be risking fentanyl poisoning just to get out of pain.

This article is a joke. The writer is so uninformed and unknowledgable its laughable. Kratom is a plant that is completely natural and safe. Where the issue lies is Kratom extracts like 7-Hydroxymitragynine, 7OH and Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl. These extracts definitely deserve stricter regulations, honest marketing and better research. They can help people. They have helped me but now that I’m trying to quit them ahead of the ban I have been so beyond miserably, DANGEROUSLY sick from withdrawls that I actually support the ban. I didnt realize what they were doing to my body but they helped me so much that I didnt really care. Theres all of this talk about banning kratom extracts but nobodys talking about how to help people who are physically dependant on them safely detox. The companies only care about getting their money while they still can(because we’re all still hopelessly addicted), the government only cares about making it illegal to push people back to bit pharma opioids(whivh lines their pockets) and nobody cares if a few thousand people die from the ban. The handling of this whole ordeal makes me realize how callous and apathetic government and companies are towards the people they affect either through products or legislation.

You hit the mark 100% I got addicted to it. Then, last November Mike Dewine signed the bill OVERNIGHT so the next day my husband went to the store to get a bottle for me, and he said this man (The owner of the store)looked like he was really sick or something. Then he tells my husband everything that happened all before 10am. Which someone was waiting at each store mainly vape shops, I had never seen kratom 7OH or kratom at any gas station. I think it was a mix of cops and i’m not sure who else. But essentially each cop had to go through the entire store, then would pull out huge black garbage bags. The owner had to throw all of their kratom 7OH, pseudo and Alks basically everything kratom related into the trash, thousands upon thousands worth of inventory. You could still get kratom tea, possibly kratom leaf powder, but I’m not even sure about that. But here is the irony, he purposely signed the bill OVERNIGHT so people couldn’t stock up, and the whole reason is just hypocrisy!! Because a woman lost her husband. He was in the middle of withdrawalIing from kratom7OH and he couldn’t take the withdrawals anymore. So he sadly shot himself in the head. Yes that is horrible and awful. So basically, he set the entire state of Ohio to be put in that exact same situation. If he really cared about our safety , he should have given the public a couple weeks or a month for the stores to sell their inventory. Also for the customer so they can set up some kind of plan. It is nothing but beneficial unless people are selling synthetics or mixing it with other stuff. But then….YOU AREN’T BUYING KRATOM!!!! A synthetic means you aren’t buying the actual plant. And to make it a Schedule 1…as an Opioid…and they are just trying to stop opioid addiction….thats the most bs ever. The thing is, kratom is responsible for getting an incredible amount of people off of heroin. FDA would rather stop a natural growing plant if they can still collect with suboxine, oxycodone, hydrocodone….then cry victim of a plant, to make money. I have used Kratom for years now. Never synthetic…I wouldn’t purchase from a gas station. But hell….ive never had an opiate addiction, so that was never the reason for trying it. I’ve had quite a few severe horse riding accidents in my day, where everything hurts. Kratom helps. It improves my mood as well. I’ve never been in danger, I’ve never had an ill experience. If people write bad about this plant, but love that marijuana is legal….come on!!! It’s another plant. Used for medicinal purposes. Do research, don’t buy synthetic…all everyone is doing is filling the fda’s pockets because they don’t want to lose their opioid business…which is ALWAYS thriving. I hate this.
How do you get off of Numbz 500 MG? My husband has been on them for a year and he wants to get off them! Does he take Suboxen? Or Methadone? I want him to get off these and plus he’s a heart patient. He’s have several strokes and I’m worried that if he does his cold Turkey, he will have a stroke.

I am truly genuinely glad they are taking this off the shelves even though the head shops will still get it and still sell it for a while but you know literally this has emotionally and financially and every single which Way changed my life to where I was living a good life my husband and I were happy we were the poster perfect marriage until these pills came out and this drink and he denies that he has a problem he denies taking them every day even though it’s a proven fact he does and literally it has just turned my life upside down I am truly truly glad they need to never put them back on the shelves again they need another let anybody get a hold of those pills because it’s going to cause another epidemic worse than heroin now
I’ve been taking regular powder kratom for over 10 years with 0 yes 0 health issues.
Kratom powder in its natural form is safe and impossible to over dose on , my wife has been taking it 6 years for lupus and its saved her from having to take opiates shes never taking them and didn’t want to start .
Myself I used to take the equivalent of 40 percocet a day of oxocodone prescribed by my pain doctor and they had stopped working and a friend had told me about kratom , I tried it and have never looked back , my health has actually improved from when I was taking pain meds , im able to spend more time out of bed and able to do more with my family .
