Hopkinton’s Will Abbott capped an impressive freshman season on the Quinnipiac lacrosse team by being named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) first team as well as the MAAC All-Rookie team.
Starting all 16 of his team’s games, the midfielder finished with 20 goals and 14 assists, ranking fourth on the team with 34 points. The Bobcats went 9-7 (5-2 MAAC) and advanced to the conference championship game before dropping a 15-14 decision to top-seeded Marist. …
UNH lacrosse player Elise Chandler was named to the America East all-conference second team as well the America East All-Academic team. Chandler, a defender, started all 17 games and was second on the team in caused turnovers (21) and ground balls (31). St. Lawrence University lacrosse goalie Alex Terry was named Eastern College Athletic Conference Division 3 North Goalie of the Month for April after going 6-2 with a 6.99 goals-against average. Terry led the Saints to an upset win over Ithaca in the first round of the league tournament before a loss to top-seeded RIT in the semifinals ended St. Lawrence’s season at 13-4 (5-3 league). Terry, who received All-Liberty League honorable mention, finished his junior season with a 13-3 record, 6.51 GAA and .576 save percentage. …
Army baseball player Tim Simoes helped the Black Knights win the Patriot League tournament championship with a best-of-three victory over rival Navy on May 18-19 in Annapolis, Maryland. Simoes started at second base in the two games Army won. In the opener, a 6-2 win, he reached base three times (two singles and a hit by pitch) and scored a run. He didn’t fare as well in the deciding game, going 0-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt, but he played errorless ball in the field (four assists) and recorded the final putout on a fielder’s choice as Army eked out a 4-3 victory. After winning the league title for the second consecutive season, Army advances to the NCAA tournament, which starts May 31. …
Bentley University sophomore shortstop Kyle Halloran hit .242 with 16 RBIs in 37 games this season. He was fourth on the team in runs scored with 25, fourth in walks with 18 and tied for third in stolen bases with five, helping the Falcons to a 21-21 record. A two-time Tri-Valley League All-Star at Hopkinton High School, Halloran prepped a year at Worcester Academy before enrolling at Bentley. …
Clarkson baseball player Mike Messier played 31 games (starting 30) in his senior season, batting .247 with two home runs, 11 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He had a strong finish, with a six-game hitting streak during the stretch run from May 4-10 when he batted .421 (8-for-19) and helped the Golden Knights reach the Liberty League tournament championship round. Clarkson won the opening game of the best-of-three series against host Rochester but dropped the next two to finish as runner-up with a final overall record of 23-17. …
Emily Viehl, a senior golfer at St. Lawrence University, was named to the Liberty League All-Academic team. Viehl ended her collegiate career by placing third on her team and 33rd overall at the Liberty League Championships on May 4 in Schenectady, New York. …
Roger Williams University sophomore Kyle Rector finished third in the 110-meter hurdles (17.74 seconds) and third in the high jump (5 feet, 10.75 inches) at the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship meet on April 27, helping his team take second place. Rector also finished sixth in the 400 hurdles (1 minute, 6.83 seconds), eighth in the pole vault (8 feet), ninth in the javelin (120 feet, 11 inches) and 15th in the discus (87 feet, 5 inches). His scores in the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, discus and pole vault were all personal bests. …
Trinity College junior Lucas Kaminski was named to the New England Wrestling Association All-Academic team for the second straight year. Kaminski, who wrestled at 157 pounds, ranked third on his team in wins with 16 (against 13 losses) with two pins. …
Sofie Varner, a freshman at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, was presented with the Aliceann Wilber Soccer Award at the athletic program’s banquet in April. The award is given to the junior varsity player whose training and attitude most advance to the program’s goals.
