Demolition work at Center School is slated to begin Nov. 2, according to a town press release.
Contractor American Environmental, which was awarded the demolition contract to remove Center School’s two rear additions, will secure the site and remove hazardous materials prior to demolition, according to the release. The work is expected to take about three months.
Following demolition, the site will be leveled and stabilized to prepare for restoration of the original 1928 school building. While the project is underway, access to the property and the nearby walking trail will be closed.
The press release states that construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Signs along Ash Street will alert residents to the work, and all construction vehicles will be staged on the Center School property. No traffic interruptions are anticipated.
Vertex was chosen as the owner’s project manager for the Center School property. May’s Annual Town Meeting budgeted $2.4 million in Community Preservation funds for the demolition of the two rear additions and the hazardous waste removal. According to the press release, American Environmental was awarded a $1.4 million contract after a “competitive bidding process.”
Once complete, the restored building will include space for the Parks & Recreation and Youth & Family Services departments. The Hopkinton Center for the Arts, which entered into a public-private partnership on the project, will have space in the building as well. The HCA is expected to contribute $4 million to the cost of the restoration and will lease the first floor.
