Hopkinton fire crews tackle ‘multiple brush fires’ off MassPike

by | Oct 27, 2024 |

The Hopkinton Fire Department battled “multiple brush fires” along Interstate 90 eastbound in Hopkinton Sunday night.

According to a post on X, the HFD was on scene with crews from the Westborough Fire Department around 6:30 p.m. A separate post from Westborough stated firefighters were working on controlling the brush fires between mile markers 100 to 106.

Both departments cautioned drivers coming through the area to stay on alert.

These fires come just as the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning Sunday morning about elevated fire risk across counties in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. According to the statement, “The combination of recent dry weather and very dry ground will continue to make conditions favorable for wildfire development.”

The NWS recommends people use caution when handling and disposing of ignition sources and to avoid outdoor burning.

We drove past 4 of these brush fires in Westborough on Sunday night. Each one was directly over the guard rails. These were not coincidental. We strongly believe they were purposely set.
