Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Town to host climate resiliency event at library

An open house next week will inform residents about how the town is approaching climate resiliency through the structure of its bylaws.

Done in collaboration with the Planning Department, the town’s Sustainability Department will host the open house on July 24 at the Hopkinton Public Library. The event will feature food and several stations intended to educate residents on different aspects of climate resiliency.

“At this event, town staff and climate resilience experts will teach you about policies that build climate resilience and how to build support for them in Hopkinton,” a statement on the town website reads.

“We want to break down that barrier between the public and getting involved in town policies,” said Julia Chun, the town’s sustainability, economic development and equity project manager. She noted the bylaw project is funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities grant program.

Chun explained that the town has worked with Siler Climate Consulting to complete a comprehensive review of the town’s bylaws. From there, an assessment was put together regarding how to make the bylaws more resilient and climate-forward.

The three major domains — which residents will learn more about at the open house — are stormwater, wetlands and development. New and updated bylaws could help in preserving green spaces, address issues with inland flooding and protect the town’s water resources, such as Lake Maspenock and Lake Whitehall.

These changes would not happen overnight, which is part of why the town hopes to bring people in to learn more.

“Many of the changes would have to go to Town Meeting,” said Chun. “Some would have to be adopted by the Planning Board.”

Following next week’s open house, she said that likely next steps would include reviews of Siler’s assessment and recommendations by bodies such as the Conservation Commission, the Department of Public Works, the Sustainable Green Committee and more.

“It’s going to be a slow process,” Chun added.

The open house is set for July 24 at the Hopkinton Public Library from 5:30-7:30 p.m. While it is not necessary, residents are encouraged to RSVP ahead of the event. More information and how to RSVP can be found on the event registration page.
